Kirna Zabete Nine West Spring Shoelaboration

Kirna Zabete for Nine West Sophi

There is a shoe for every taste in the Nine West for Kirna Zabete collection, from flirty feathered satin stilettos to urban leather sneaker wedges.  My favorite is the Sophi peep-toe pump, pictured above.  It is the perfect transition shoe from winter to spring, and who doesn’t need a sexy pair of strappy black pumps?  Kirna Zabete is a best-friend duo who have made their NYC store a must-stop-shop for style at its best.  This six-month collaboration gave the two a chance to design shoes for the first time, creating day-to-night shoe wardrobes for each month from February to July.  Each month features a high heel, a mid heel and a flat that all convey a particular “mood”.

Nine West Kirna Zabete shoe collaboration

Keep an eye on the ladies behind Kirna Zabete, Sarah and Beth.  They collaborated with Target last fall, and they are sure to continue to contribute their wear-everywhere style aesthetic to other eager companies.

Want to see the entire collection in action?  Watch this video, in which Garance Dore styled her favorite looks along with Sarah and Beth.

The shoes range from $59 to $169, so you can justify buying a few pairs to satisfy your current mood! Shop the entire Nine West x Kirna Zabete shoe collection at ninewest.com.

Giles Deacon for Nine West Fall 2011 Collection

Nine West has partnered with British fashion designer Giles Deacon to create a whimsical capsule collection for fall/winter 2011-12.  A fun contrast from Nine West’s super-feminine “Shoelaboration” with Sophie Theallet, this collection includes carry-everywhere canvas and leather tote bags, a chunky suede wedge, a buckled bootie, pointy-toed flats and playful necklaces.

That mischievous little mouse-like creature on several of the pieces?  That’s Eek, the motif used by Giles in many of his signature collections.  So cute!  You will see him on the tote bag, hanging from jewelry, and included on details like zipper pulls.

The Giles Deacon for Nine West collection launches in August but is available for pre-order now. Prices start at $26 for jewelry and $99 for handbags and footwear.  Choose your Eek!

Shine This Holiday Season In Dazzling Shoes

Nine West Timepiece Pumps, $89 at NineWest.com

These are the shoes I ended up bringing to Kansas with me for the holidays.  I would have brought more options, but I had for myself the goal of packing light, and I succeeded – fitting everything in one suitcase (under 50lbs) and my laptop bag!  These Nine West pumps are perfect, with the beaded decoration on the heels and the supple suede upper, and of course black goes with everything.  Not to mention they make my legs look AHH-MAZING and my feet don’t hurt after a few hours in them.

Of course, one pair of heels just won’t quite cut it for me…I did make a shoe purchase at TJ Maxx the other day ($69!!!) that will make me look and feel like royalty during the New Year’s Eve festivities.

Fall Must-Have: Nine West Military-Inspired ‘Donley’ Bootie

I know you already know I have a thing for Nine West shoes.  Nine West shoes are affordable, well-made and extremely stylish.  I just ordered two more pairs for the holiday season, so you’ll be seeing a LOT of Nine West on Shoe Smitten!

About a month ago I made a visit to the flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York for a press event (Fred was there!).  These DONLEY booties drew me in from the moment I saw them perched on a shelf.  Even so, I decided to pass them by for the moment and take a look at everything else.  Don’t want to be hasty, right?  The PAOLETTA leopard pumps and SMOOCH round-toe wedges were gorgeous and I seriously considered taking them home, but instead went with my first love of the day – DONLEY, in black suede.  After all, shoe love is true love.

DONLEY is a military-inspired high heel lace up bootie with buckle accents.  I’ve been wearing them everywhere paired with my favorite new green cargo skinnys and black leggings.  These boots make me feel so confident and powerful!  You wouldn’t think just by looking at them that they would be comfortable for all-day wear, but I can walk for hours in them, and thanks to the lug sole I haven’t slipped once.  The 4″ heel is complemented by a 1/2″ platform.  I’ve enjoyed DONLEY so much, I’m considering buying DONLEY in green/brown suede.

Buy It Now: Nine West Donley, $129 – shop the 50% off sale, plus get free shipping at Ninewest.com thru November 18!

*note to readers: I received the Nine West DONLEY for free at the press event (all press attendees were given a choice of one shoe to take home), but this in no way influenced my opinions expressed here.

Talking Beauty and Shoes with Nigel Barker

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with Nigel Barker, renowned fashion photographer and judge of America’s Next Top Model.  His new book, Nigel Barker’s Beauty Equation, offers beauty and fashion tips for every woman so she can be her best and most beautiful, from the inside out. But the book is much more than just an informative read – it prompts readers to get interactive online at www.beautyequation.com and share their photos and feelings!  So what does this post have to do with shoes?  Read on to find out (Nigel has a thing for shoes!), and to learn a bit more about the book.

Can you tell us about Beauty Equation…how do you define beauty?

The purpose of the book was to discuss beauty from an inner beauty attribute standpoint.  All too often these days, when the conversation comes up, it’s often to do with skin-deep issues, and cosmetic surgery, do you have perfect skin, are you a certain size, height, build.  As someone who works in the business of fashion and beauty, I think we have to distinguish between the modeling business and being truly beautiful.  To capture a photograph that is iconic and timeless has nothing to do with if you’re a model or not.  It has to do with the life you’re leading and your spontaneity, charisma and authenticity.  Those are the things that, as a photographer, if you can capture them, bring your picture to life.  When you utilize them as a person, you have the potential to be the beautiful people we can all be.”

One of the exciting things about the book is we’ve created at the end of each chapter a series of photo challenges, video challenges and written challenges and through a form of art therapy we call Photo Therapy, we ask the readers to examine themselves by taking photos of themselves embodying the attributes in these chapters, and uploading the photos to our website beautyequation.com where they can share their portfolios or keep them private.  If they share them, then they can really start this conversation about beauty with the whole community.

How does beauty come through for you when you’re taking a photo/on film?

Your eyes are the windows to your soul. It doesn’t matter what your facade looks like if you’re not shining through your eyes, emoting, and lack passion or that spark.  In a good photograph, you look at it, you believe it, you trust it, you’re drawn in by it.  That’s why we talk so much about personality on Top Model.

What do you think about the re-emergence of more curvaceous, “real” women walking the runways and being featured in fashion editorials?  Is this something that will stick?

I think things are changing, however the fashion business is trend-driven and things are going to come in and out of style, and we’ve had curvy models in the past.  But I think advertising as a whole is taking a different look on the issue, and we don’t have so much curvy girls, but real women in general, whether they’re curvy, or flat chested, or boyish-shaped or older or younger, and I think that’s a healthy outlook.  It’s about using common sense and promoting a healthy attitude and lifestyle instead of a body-mass index.

NOW ONTO SHOES…

How important are high heels to a woman’s appearance, and tell me about this rumor I’ve heard that you have a shoe fetish…?

I am fascinated by shoes, in fact, I buy all my wife’s heels. Even this morning she told me about a pair of heels she wanted to buy and I said, ‘Wait a second, let me check this out’, because I have a thing about feet and shoes in general.  In fact, people have told me that I have a foot fetish.  I also have a heel fetish.  I love the construction of women’s shoes, it’s very smart engineering and beautifully done, and I like anything that is well-styled.  A good heel is something that’s hard to come by, and when it’s done well…I’ve spent a small fortune in Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo in the past!

Christian Louboutin Hyper Prive Peep-Toe Pumps, $865 at SaksFifthAvenue.com

Does that mean Christian Louboutin your favorite designer, er, your wife’s favorite shoe designer?

Yes, I would definitely say he would be my favorite designer, for sure.

What tips can you give our readers for walking gracefully in high heels? And looking great in a photograph in general?

I have been fairly shocked by how badly some people walk in heels!  I’m not a cross-dresser but I have tried to walk in [heels] and I actually did a pretty good job! (laughing) It’s one of those things, you’ve gotta kind of commit to it, work through the pain.  Realize this is what you’re signing up for.  When you stand on your toes, it immediately gives you extra height, and what happens to is it makes all of your muscles tense and tighten look tauter, and your physicality is accentuated.  And it works fantastically in pictures, and in fact, sometimes when I’m photographing a model above the neck, I’ll ask them to put heels on because it changes the look in thier face.

That makes total sense, because when I put on a pair of heels, I instantly feel more confident.  And I bet my readers would say the same!  Lastly, can you tell us a little bit about what charities you’re passionate about, and what other projects you have in the works?

I shot Runway Relief last month, which was an ad campaign for Nine West where the proceeds being raised went to Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.  It’s a lot of fun and poignant when various elements of the fashion industry can collide and do something which is more about being a role model than a fashion model.  And as a personal note, I just signed up as the first male ambassador for the United Nation Foundation’s new charity Girl Up, just launched at the beginning of October.  I’m also working on a documentary film for the Humane Society of the United States and the Shark-Free Marina Initiative, an initiative to stop shark finning.

We’re already working on our next book, called Blossoming Beauties (click for a sneak peek!), a compilation of pregnant nude photographs that I’ve taken over the past two years.  Over 60 women of all different walks of life are featured, all in black and white, and it’s a piece to really celebrate pregnancy in all its glory, and life in general.  I have two kids of my own, and my wife appears in the book pregnant with both children. The book should be released by September of next year.

Thanks so much, Nigel!

Nine West Runway Relief Photoshoot + Special Edition ‘Modelinia’ Boots Now Available

Yesterday was a HOT and SWEATY one here in NYC, but even so, forty top models including Coco Rocha, Jessica WhiteHannah Holman, and Lyndsey Scott stormed the Meatpacking District for a photoshoot with fashion photographer Nigel Barker to kick off Nine West’s Runway Relief program.  Dressed in adorable t-shirts created and styled just for this event, jean shorts, and Nine West boots equipped with pedometers, the girls put aside their discomfort to take part this fashionable cause.  A few even wore leather jackets, and it was over 90 degrees outside!  But you’ve got to admit – they looked fantastic.  Thanks to the pedometers, the models’ steps can be tracked between fashion show events, and for every mile of steps taken, Nine West is donating money to Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.

The boots pictured here are the limited edition Nine West ‘Modelinia’ Runway Relief boots…cool huh?  Pick up a pair of your own now on Nine West’s website for $199.

Coco and Me

How excited was I to have the opportunity to meet Coco?!  She’s so sweet and charismatic in person, and I seriously envy her super-long legs (btw, I’m wearing heels here and she is not).  In case you missed my updates live from the photoshoot yesterday afternoon or couldn’t make it to the set, you can check it out on my Twitter page, Nine West”s Livestream , or Modelinia.  Here are a few more photos and video clips from the shoot.  I had so much fun, and shot a few great candid photos too:

It was hot outside but the fashion was hotter!

It's Oh-So-Coco :)

This gorgeous model lets her hair go wild while cooling off.

Moments later, a stunning hair moment captured. Love this model, and her hair!

Couldn't get enough of the boots!

Best Fashionable Women’s Shoes in Sizes 10 and Up

I hear time and time again from my larger-footed friends that it’s nearly impossible to find fashionable shoes in their sizes.  While I’m no size 6, I can generally find shoes in my size 8.5 (which Yahoo’s Shine reports is now the average size) without much trouble.  But every woman should be able to find high heels and sandals that fit just right.  So I did a little research and found a few brands and websites specializing in larger sizes.  If you have any resources or tips to share, please do so in the comments section below.

Barefoot Tess specializes in large size shoes for women, carrying brands such as Bernardo, Blowfish and Poetic License.  Their motto?  “Because style doesn’t stop at size 10″ – love it!  Check out the Exclusives section where you’ll find shoes specially made for Barefoot Tess customers by Corso Como, Jeffrey Campbell and more.  And right now the site is having a promotion: when you spend $75 on Blowfish, you get $25 off those styles.

www.BarefootTess.com

Designer Shoes is another online store that specializes in bigger sizes.  Here you can find name-brand and designer shoes in the most trendy styles.  Right now they carry an assortment of cute candy-colored wedges and metallic flats.

And when it comes to brands that are large feet-friendly, Taryn Rose shoes are designed by an orthopedic surgeon and they are just as stylish as they are good for your feet.  The shoes are hand-sewn in Italy with the finest materials, and the styles are cutting-edge and wearable day-to-night.  I’m a huge fan of this fashion forward REBEL wedge and CADELE ankle bootie:

Repetto flats are minimalistic and flattering.  I’m partial to these lace ballerina flats:

Rachel Comey wedges are sexy twists on unisex styles, for example this wooden-wedge kiltie brogue, which will go with nearly everything and have a slimming effect on the foot.  www.rachelcomey.com

Nine West sandals are reasonably priced, stylish, and they will stand the test of time.  A slide like this Quincylla will accommodate a larger foot while remaining flattering, thanks to the substantial coverage and toe-and-heel-baring style.  www.ninewest.com
